FROM DUBLIN POETS WITH LOVE

THE LAST ROSE OF SUMMER
(Thomas Moore/1779-1852)

'Tis the last rose of summer /Sekuntum mawar terakhir musim panas
Left blooming alone; /Tertinggal sendirian untuk meretas
All her lovely companions /Seluruh temannya dengan indah paras
Are faded and gone; /Memudar dan menghilang tak berbekas

No flower of her kindred, /Tidak ada bunga lain dari sejenisnya
No rosebud is nigh, /Tidak ada mawar lain di dekatnya
To reflect back her blushes, /Untuk mencerminkan keanggunannya
To give sigh for sigh. /Untuk membalas desahannya

I'll not leave thee, thou lone one! /Aku tidak akan meninggalkanmu sendirian di sana
To pine on the stem; /Agar kau tidak merana di tangkai tempatmu berada
Since the lovely are sleeping, /Karena sang keindahan sedang menutup mata
Go, sleep thou with them. /Pergi beristilahatlah dengan mereka

Thus kindly I scatter, /Dan aku dengan lembut akan menabur
Thy leaves o'er the bed, /Rekahan daunmu di atas tempat tidur
Where thy mates of the garden /Di mana temanmu di taman tertidur
Lie scentless and dead. /Berbaring tidak berdaya dan terpekur

So soon may I follow, /Segera setelahnya berlanjutlah sebuah masa
When friendships decay, /Ketika jalinan persahabatan tidak lagi mengada
From Love's shining circle /Dari lingkar cinta yang bercahaya
The gems drop away. /Batu permata jatuh dari tahtanya

When true hearts lie withered/Ketika hati yang murni menjadi layu
And fond ones are flown, /Dan ia yang terkasih terbang tak menentu
Oh! who would inhabit, /Oh, siapa yang ingin mendiami waktu
This bleak world alone? /Di dunia yang suram ini tanpa dirimu?

AND THEN NO MORE
(James Clarence Mangan/1803-1849)

I saw her once, one little while, and then no more:
’Twas Eden’s light on Earth a while, and then no more.
Amid the throng she passed along the meadow-floor:
Spring seemed to smile on Earth awhile, and then no more;
But whence she came, which way she went, what garb she wore
I noted not; I gazed a while, and then no more!

I saw her once, one little while, and then no more:
’Twas Paradise on Earth a while, and then no more.
Ah! what avail my vigils pale, my magic lore?
She shone before mine eyes awhile, and then no more.
The shallop of my peace is wrecked on Beauty’s shore.
Near Hope’s fair isle it rode awhile, and then no more!

I saw her once, one little while, and then no more:
Earth looked like Heaven a little while, and then no more.
Her presence thrilled and lighted to its inner core
My desert breast a little while, and then no more.
So may, perchance, a meteor glance at midnight o’er
Some ruined pile a little while, and then no more!

I saw her once, one little while, and then no more:
The earth was Peri-land awhile, and then no more.
Oh, might I see but once again, as once before,
Through chance or wile, that shape awhile, and then no more!
Death soon would heal my griefs! This heart, now sad and sore,
Would beat anew a little while, and then no more.
